The Passionate Citizen Intensive with Rabbi Michael Lerner and Cat Zavis
Description
WHAT YOU WILL DISCOVER IN THESE 10 WEEKS
Classes are held on Tuesdays at 5:00 pm PT. In this 10-week transformational program, Kat hovers and Rabbi Lerner will guide you through the fundamental skills and competencies for lasting and passionate social change so that you can make powerful inner shifts that will enable you to effectively reshape our social structures for the well-being of the planet. Each weekly live learning and training will harmoniously build upon the next, so that you develop a complete, holistic understanding of how to be a catalyst to bring more compassion, generosity, love, and justice to the world. Our typical weekly outline will be to first focus on the core skills for you to develop your set of engagement tools and then look at a specific problem area where we can apply the principles and understand the path to real solutions. By focusing our attention each week on the prevailing social crises gripping our country and the world, we will better understand how a spiritually progressive approach to social change can break our deadlock, inspire compassion, generate creative problem solving, and build unity through political division. Module 1: A SPIRITUALLY PROGRESSIVE OUTLOOK AND WHY IT MATTERS (JUNE 16) We will share the difference between the so-called “liberal” worldview and “spiritually progressive”, and why it is important to bring the spiritual values of love, kindness, generosity and caring into discussions about political rights and economic rights – to see each other as the embodiment of the sacred and respond to the universe with reverence. , surprise and radical amazement. We will focus on the ecological crisis and movement and see how to approach this issue from the perspective of a spiritually progressive worldview and how it differs from both the liberal and the conservative worldview. Main issue of the week: An environmental crisis that will affect us all We are marching in the hundreds of thousands on the streets, voting for GMO labeling, challenging coal and hydraulic fracturing in our communities, and signing petition after petition to stop the Keystone Pipeline and the Trans-Pacific Partnership Trade Agreement, and yet environmental devastation continues unabated. We try to do our bit by recycling waste, buying local produce and creating local gardens, but there is no overarching strategy to address these issues. This week we look at the tools and strategies needed to create a united movement that can effectively challenge the corporate and political elite in this country and around the world. In this module, you will: Acquire the skills to integrate a spiritually progressive worldview into environmental work. Find out why social change efforts are not as effective as they could be, and what you can do to make a difference. Develop an understanding of the importance of worldview advocacy and systemic change when working on local or specific issues. Module 2: HOW TO IMAGE THE WORLD WE WANT (23 JUNE) In this session, we will share a worldview based on spiritual and ethical values and discuss the importance of articulating these values in social change and political work. Rather than simply looking at political and social change through the prism of political rights and economic rights, you will come to understand deeper, more fundamental principles that can help build a movement that brings people together across differences and speaks of their basic needs. Main issue of the week: Black life matters, but poverty and economic inequality Ferguson, Staten Island, Baltimore, Oakland – take a look around and you will see, breaking into public consciousness, a deep crisis that has been there for decades. However, it only appears in the public consciousness when something as radical as a racial riot or the outright murder of an unarmed black man makes it impossible for the media to completely bury the story. In our first focus episode, we discuss these topics and explore how we can approach these issues from a spiritually progressive perspective. In this module, you will: Understand how to activate the power of vision, not just protest. See how to work more effectively through guerrilla divisions. Overcome limiting beliefs about what is possible when you share a vision.
Module 3: UNDERSTANDING AND OVERCOMING RESISTANCE (JUNE 30) For the third week, we will focus on understanding and overcoming our own resistances in order to create the world we want. We ask: what messages that we received in childhood and adulthood interfere with our ability to actually uphold the Highest Values and create what we want for ourselves and the world? When you can clearly identify these internal and external resistances, you will learn how to overcome these messages and help others to do the same. We will learn to calm the inner voice that tells us to be “realistic” when in fact we want to be idealistic. Main issue of the week: What’s with politics as usual In this section, we will share a spiritually progressive vision that is different from what you hear from liberal and conservative leaders. We will use current political realities in the United States as examples – what the Clintons and Obama could have done but did not, and what progressive candidates like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and other progressives (or even perhaps you) might say and to do to support and inspire the public in new ways that existing social change movements or liberal / progressive candidates have not yet presented. In this module you will Learn how asking us to be realistic hinders our ability to see and defend the world we truly want and limits our effectiveness in transforming the world and its systems. Gain clarity as to why people are constantly voting against their own economic interests and deeper deeper needs that must be met to inspire people from all walks of life (regardless of religion, political party, class, or race). Understand the inner psychological / emotional, intellectual / ideological and spiritual resistance to the belief that a world of love and justice is possible. Module 4: THE IMPACT OF GLOBAL CAPITALISM ON OUR PSYCHE AND HOW TO TRANSFORM IT (JULY 7) Global capitalist values have permeated all sectors of our society, so that everything has a price but nothing has value, and we are trapped in cycles of overconsumption, depression, alienation, debt and loneliness. We explore how capitalism became its own religion and led to the destruction of families, morals, communities, and the ability to create meaningful, lasting and trusting relationships. Capitalism has led us to believe that we live in a meritocracy where if you don’t “do well” (that is, you don’t make a certain amount of money or don’t have a certain amount of power), then it’s your own fault. This leads to a tendency to blame yourself. We will unpack this phenomenon and help you move from self-blame to understanding how the market and the social structures in which we live affect your “success.” Main issue of the week: The elephant in the room – global capitalism In this week’s issue, you will discover how your potential political engagement can help heal the damage from current repressive systems – while restoring democracy and generosity in our social, political and economic institutions to reflect love and justice. In this module, you will: Get to know the myriad of ways that global capitalism affects our internal and external lives. Explain the psychological consequences that capitalist society has had on the way you relate to yourself and others. Unpack the idea that capitalism, as the status quo, is the only possible world order, and imagine a new one that prioritizes a new outcome.
Module 5: DEVELOPING REAL EMPATHY-COMPASSION FOR YOURSELF AND OTHERS (JULY 14) It is imperative that activists, social change agents and social change movements learn to interact with themselves, their leaders, and those perceived as the other side with compassion and empathy. Too often we demonize those in our movements and those on the other side instead of trying to compassionately and empathically understand where they might be coming from. This demonization undermines our effectiveness and, perhaps more importantly, leads to a movement that does not embody the values and principles we seek to create in a transformed world. To cultivate compassion, we will practice empathic listening and expression. Main issue of the week: Law as a Healing Profession Law school teaches lawyers to argue either side of an issue, and our legal system is based on adversarial process, not restorative. What would our world look like if we really focused on healing evil and evil, rather than punishing? What if contracts were based on the shared values of caring for each other and the planet, rather than providing the greatest return regardless of the cost to people or the planet? We will look at how to transform our legal system from one that focuses on individuality and transactions to one that supports community, connections, care and relationships. In this module, you will: Learn about alternative legal systems and social solutions that emphasize and prioritize community, connection, belonging, healing and restoration rather than punishment and guilt. Learn how to use the power of empathy and compassion to heal, transform, and restore the world. Master the skills necessary to empathically listen and hear others and to listen to and know yourself more deeply.
Module 6: INTEGRATING A NEW BOTTOM LINE INTO THE PROFESSION (JULY 21) What would your job look like if your profession was based on the principles of new results, and not on maximizing profits? How will this change what we do every day and how we interact with each other in the workplace? In this session, we will learn how our professional life can be a starting point for social change if we consciously transform it to fill it with meaning and purpose. We will discuss how important and possible it is to devote your labor energy to the world of love and justice. We will share current work in various professions (Law, Healthcare, Psychology, Engineering, Programming and Scientists) and develop strategies for creating a professional Network of Spiritual Progressives target group in your own workplace. Main issue of the week: Transforming our education system We all know that our public education system has been seriously damaged. Schools are underfunded, teachers are not paid, classes are huge, and student needs are sorely met. We will share our visions, ideas and create strategies to engage people in changing our education system so that all students perceive school as safe, fun, engaging and challenging, and teachers have the flexibility and freedom to share their talents and abilities in a way that inspire and help shape critical thinkers. In this module, you will: Understand the inner psychological / emotional, intellectual / ideological and spiritual resistance to the belief that a world of love and justice is possible. Gain a deeper understanding of how and why schools were structured the way they are, and how this structure supports the current economic system. Explore what the education system would look like if it was based on new findings. Module 7: BRINGING A WIDER PERSPECTIVE INTO A LARGER SOCIAL CHANGE OF MOVEMENT (JULY 28) Sharing difficult messages in the privacy of our homes, with family or friends can be difficult, but raising difficult issues and sharing difficult messages in a public context can be even more difficult. In this session, we will discuss how to raise the level of conversation about the movement for political and social change from simply focusing on a narrow issue (such as homelessness, hunger, poverty, fracturing, climate change) or a specific identity (such as women, racism, LGBTQ ) to the development of a worldview based on solidarity that can bring people together working on different problems or from different perspectives. We will use the skills learned in Module 5 to respond with compassion and empathy – while at the same time promoting our vision and perspective and creating a movement for Love and Justice. Main issue of the week: A healthcare system that can work for everyone We all know that our health care system in the US is far from healthy. But there is neither political will nor a sense of popular power to transform him. In this section, we’ll look at what hinders our ability to engage in meaningful change and how we can create a health care system that truly works for everyone – patients, doctors, nurses and patient care assistants. In this module, you will: Understand how capitalism affects our ability in the US to have a healthcare system that works for everyone. Imagine a healthcare system that truly prioritizes healing and well-being for all, rather than one that prioritizes profit. Learn to contextualize local, focused issues within spiritually progressive politics without losing either.
Module 8: LIVING SPIRITUAL VALUES (AUGUST 4) Truly transforming our society so that it works for everyone is not only doing good deeds like feeding the hungry once a month or sheltering the homeless, but ending hunger and homelessness for all … and much more. Over the millennia, there have been wonderful people who have shown kindness and generosity in their personal lives, performing acts of charity, giving money or food to the poor, but still participating in economic and political structures that harm and oppress others. In this session we will look at how to use our faith, religion and spirituality to participate in the work of transforming and healing the world. We learn about a network of spiritual progressive ethos of integrating self-transformation with spiritually involved activism. Main issue of the week: Religious / Spiritual Communities and Work for Transformative Change In this module, you will: Think about what your personal spiritual values are and how you can translate those values into a common goal for all of humanity. Determine what factors are blocking your ability to live or realize your spiritual values. Develop tools to help you start engaging in spiritual activities. Learn what it means to be a spiritual leader.
MODULE 9: PROMOTING “UNREALISTIC” PROPOSALS THAT COULD LEAD TO REAL CHANGES (PART 1) (AUGUST 11) In this session, you will learn about “unrealistic” suggestions and how to share them with others in a way that inspires and engages. We will practice bringing suggestions to various political groups, social change organizations, spiritual and religious communities, and families and friends as a way of integrating all the teachings shared in previous sessions. Main issue of the week: Environmental and Social Responsibility Amendment (ESRA) to the U.S. Constitution This week we take a look at a specific proposal from a network of spiritual progressives that embodies the values of love, justice, non-violence, peace and environmental sustainability – to see each other as the embodiment of the sacred and to respond to the universe with awe, wonder, and radical amazement. In this module, you will: Embody the idea that change is possible and that the reality of a better world is as unreal as we allow it to be. Learn to speak effectively on behalf of large-scale change in a way that not only seems believable, but is desirable enough for others. Explore all the ins and outs of ESRA to discover tangible steps you can take to create meaningful, systemic change. MODULE 10: PROMOTING “UNREALISTIC” PROPOSALS THAT COULD LEAD TO REAL CHANGES (PART 2) (AUGUST 18) In this session, you will learn how to overcome your inner reluctance to be a “transformer of consciousness” and how to respond to the obvious objections that people always raise – both rational objections and those based on inner cynicism, powerlessness and despair about whether we can whether we will ever create a world that embodies the spiritual values that we privately aspire to, but publicly question whether this is actually possible. Main issue of the week: Global Marshall Plan (GMP) This week we look at a specific proposal put forward by a network of spiritual progressives that embodies the values of love, justice, non-violence, peace, environmental sustainability – to see each other as the embodiment of the sacred and to respond to the universe with awe, wonder, and radical amazement. In this module, you will: Learn how to effectively formulate this domestic and foreign policy initiative. Understand safety as generosity, not domination. Find out how GMP will shape global consciousness and systems and how it can lead to meaningful change for the better for all. Self-Help-Online Self-Help Course More information on self-help: Self-help, or self-improvement, is self-directed improvement — economic, intellectual, or emotional — often with a substantial psychological foundation. There are many different group Self-Help programs, each with a focus, methods, associated beliefs, supporters, and, in some cases, leaders. Concepts and terms stemming from the Self-Help culture and the twelve-step culture, such as recovery, dysfunctional families, and codependency, have become firmly established in mainstream language. Self-help often uses publicly available information or support groups, both online and in person, where people in similar situations come together. Since the early examples of independent legal practice and home advice, the connotations of the word have spread and are often applied, in particular, to education, business, psychology and psychotherapy, usually distributed through the popular genre of self-help books. According to the APA Psychology Dictionary, potential benefits of self-help groups that professionals may not be able to provide include friendship, emotional support, experiential knowledge, identity, meaningful roles, and a sense of belonging.
