MODULE 2: GIFTS OF SHADOW (MARCH 21) To fully connect with personal genius, it is necessary to explore the shadow, that closed part of the psyche where we hide aspects of ourselves that threaten the “authorized version” – the status quo of what we want the world to see. Learned to adapt, to behave, to avoid risk and not to stand out from the crowd, we bury (too often) our originality, uniqueness, passion and non-conformism in the shadows along with our gifts. As Buckminster Fuller put it, “Everyone is born a genius, but the process of life robs us of genius.” The shadow is the place where we hold this rejected power. In this module, you will find that: A shadow is that unrecognized, forbidden, forbidden part of the psyche, where we hide things (both positive and negative) that cause us discomfort. To earn recognition and love, to be part of a group (inner circle) and to avoid alienating our guardians and those whose opinions we value, we tend to hide our gifts in the shadows. We are taught from an early age to adapt, obey, behave and hide what is most original and risky in us. You cannot know yourself completely or access your true power without exploring your personal shadow; it is extremely useful and allows you to get back your rejected and discarded parts Recognizing the gifts of the shadow increases courage, heals shame, and connects you to your core strengths This is the restoration of our abandoned originality and strength – our coming of age as creative people on the path of awakening – “you become enlightened not by imagining figures of light, but by becoming aware of darkness,” wrote Carl Jung. MODULE 3: TRUST TO THE GIFT (MARCH 28) Recognizing your talents and being able to trust them are two different things. Like love, genius is not what you choose; instead, he chooses you, and accepting what you were born with is the next crucial step in self-realization. Many people reject their genius (just as many people reject love) when it doesn’t match their ideal of what a gift should look like. When you betray the truth about who you are (and what you were born with), you are missing out on the opportunity to become your most authentic self and discover what is within you. As with any spiritual practice, the awakening of a genius (like loving another) requires both trust and dedication. In this module, you will find that: We are often surprised at the content of the shadow and what actually inspires us, what may conflict with the image we present to the world (and even the person we want to be) It takes patience and wisdom to accept your gifts, which may not be what you might have chosen (if you were God) – just as you cannot choose who you love, you cannot choose your loved ones the gifts Having received the gift of the shadow, we can react negatively; we can try to deny what we have seen, but trying to do so is futile and destructive – prime examples of this are sexuality (which, when closed, becomes poisonous) and professional abilities (which may not coincide with personal will), for example, a poet who longs to write the great American novel. Accepting and trusting your true gifts requires humility, flexibility, and imagination. You are receiving immense energy through this acceptance, just like finding the outlet of your original light switch – suddenly your inner world is illuminated, allowing insight and self-discovery in all areas of your life. By relying on your natural affinities (gifts) and surrendering to a force greater than yourself, you connect with veriditas, a greening, revitalizing, energizing force that animates the entire Universe (including yourself).
MODULE 5: FOCUS AND FLOW (APRIL 11) You cannot enter a flow state without first learning to focus. Many gifted people never manage to find their way due to a lack of focused attention, an inability to stick to their best intentions. Absent-mindedness, ambivalence, resistance, insecurity – all forms of confusion – drain your determination and energy for the life of a gifted person. Personal genius (like love) doesn’t come for free; it requires faith and diligence, as well as a willingness to give up bad habits that interfere with personal growth. Fortunately, there are concentration and flow enhancement tools that can help you along your path. In this module, you will find that: Creativity requires concentration; without one-pointed attention you cannot manifest your gifts in the world When you use discipline as an ally (the student follows their teacher or tradition out of love) and develop a zero-tolerance policy for self-deprecation, you are merging with the “teacher within.” Using one-pointed attention, you can learn to say no to distractions and ambivalence saboteurs; then you can abandon the myth of multitasking and defeat the habit of trying to do too much at the same time Focus creates a sacred space in which manifestation-refuge for the creative spirit can occur, just as one-pointed attention allows meditation to occur during practice. With focus comes a state of flow, a blessed state of oneness with personal genius, where time seems to stop and we realize that we are exactly where we need to be; it brings relief to the mind and opens the channel (s) of possibilities The flow is identical with presence, a single state of being, which is the goal of all spiritual practices MODULE 6: PLAY POWER (APRIL 18) Playfulness is one of the powerful tools that can help you increase your concentration and flow, although you are rarely encouraged to develop it. Without play, there is no freedom to push boundaries, experiment with fresh ideas, open new doors (which both scare and excite you), or risk the possibility of failure. There can be no growth without failure; creative life is impossible without penetration into unknown territory, mastering the art of “not knowing”. Through the power of play, you will learn to transcend the omniscient mind (the enemy of inspiration and rebirth) and enter the mystery of everything that remains to be discovered. In this module, you will find that: By connecting to presence and allowing your gifts to manifest, you can rediscover the power of play to liberate and nourish you. Play neutralizes the limiting nature of the ego and frees you to be like children in how you relate to your gifts and to other people. When you learn to play, you are healing a child within yourself who may have been too young and therefore lived with regret or feelings of ignorance or invisibility. The game gives you access to intuition and right-brain (irrational) creativity; you begin to understand that “thinking” has its limits. Logic can be a straitjacket when you lean on it too much. “We’re really poor if we’re only sane,” wrote psychologist DW Winnicott. Play also frees you from the need to explore areas of life and yourself that are too threatening to the protective, adult ego mind – you stop taking yourself so seriously that it paradoxically makes you more formidable. Play helps you overcome the fixed, contingent boundaries, false duality (and opposition) that lock us in in a life of over-caution – you’ll learn “that risk is extra life”.
