The Way of the Spiritual Warrior with Matthew Fox
Description
RETHINKING A MEN’S BEGINNING: STRENGTH AND CONFIDENCE TO LOOK INTO A DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL
As a spiritual seeker, you may have focused on accessing or developing the Divine Feminine within you. However, in order to act, manifest and truly create the changes we so desperately need at this time, we all (women and men) are called to embrace the divine feminine and Sacred Masculine within us – to become spiritual warriors in our communities and our world. Many spiritual leaders and mystics call this time the “dark night of the soul” for all mankind. You may be personally experiencing deep difficulties in your own life and relationships, or you are trying to manifest your higher calling and transform old ways of thinking, acting, and being. In these uncertain times, with all the creative energy that awakens in us, it takes a lot of energy to stay focused and act with courage and confidence. This power is often drawn from sacred masculinity, yet many of us have been exposed to an unhealthy, toxic masculinity that reinforces oppressive, destructive patriarchal systems. In these times, we do not need soldiers, we need warriors … Spiritual warriors, whose orders come from the soul, and not from an external commander. The soldier delivers or falls in pain, but the warrior does everything with love, meeting pain face to face. Matthew Fox, an internationally renowned spiritual theologian, Episcopal priest and activist, explains that the Sacred Masculine (and therefore the spiritual warrior) is largely unrecognized or expressed, “because Western culture is still dualistic and values thinking over feeling, the material wealth over spiritual growth, scientific fact over intuitive knowledge, men over women and heterosexuals over homosexuals. ” The answer to this division is in the unity of the Divine Feminine and the Sacred Masculine – expressed through the archetype of the spiritual warrior. The qualities of a spiritual warrior are essential to navigate the complexities of modern life, stand confidently in your truth, and advocate for the changes that are needed in your relationships, work life and society. Embodying these qualities means acting with an open heart, channeling anger effectively, and being willing to “go to the edge” spiritually to benefit your own and others’ growth. WHAT YOU WILL DISCOVER IN THESE 7 WEEKS Classes are held on Thursdays at noon PST. In this 7-week transformational intensive, Matthew guides you through the fundamental principles and qualities of a spiritual warrior. Each weekly live contemplation and training will harmoniously build on previous activities. You will develop a complete holistic understanding of the practices, tools and principles that will allow you to combine the divine feminine and the Sacred Masculine and fully activate your gifts in service to the world. MODULE 1: DEFINING THE SPIRITUAL WARRIOR (SEPTEMBER 7th) The Sufi mystic Hafiz glorifies the spiritual warrior who stays close during the dark periods of our lives or in our culture, known as the Dark Night of the Soul (and what we may also call “the dark night of our kind”). The warrior does not flee, denial, or become addicted. In this first session, you will become familiar with the teachings of Hafiz and the teachings of Meister Eckhart, Joanna Macy and others who talk about developing a mystical warrior or prophet who, as Rabbi Heschel teaches, is not afraid to “interfere.” You will learn: What mystical traditions teach about the Dark Night The value of a dark night when you can face it wisely The archetype of the spiritual warrior and your ability to develop that inner strength and courage How the teachings of the mystic Meister Eckhart and Buddhist teacher Joanna Macy can help develop the spiritual warrior.
MODULE 2: SOURCES OF A SACRED MEN’S BEGINNING (SEPTEMBER 14) Father Heaven, Green Man, Blue Man, hunter-gatherer, and other archetypes rarely mentioned in patriarchal society are actually “spiritual sources” that can nourish healthy and sacred masculinity. Defining masculinity in terms of a reptilian brain (being number one and dominating others), not in terms of cooperation, serves empires, but not the planet and deepening human relationships, which is one of the gifts of the Sacred Masculine. You will learn: Deepening the Sacred Male Archetype of the Father of Heaven Deepening the Green Man Sacred Male Archetype Deepening the Blue Human Sacred Male Archetype Deepening the Sacred Male Hunter-Gatherer Archetype Practices to develop these archetypes in yourself and with others MODULE 3: THE INNER MYSTIC YOUR SACRED MEN’S FOUNDATION (SEPTEMBER 21st) Hafiz teaches that a person becomes a holy warrior “only if you and God become sweet lovers.” This means that the warrior must be a mystic, for the Mystic in us is a lover. Lover of earth, life, animals, beauty, health, children, unborn people, poetry, music and all the rest of creation. How mystic poets lead us to such love? Here we turn to mystics like Mary Oliver, Thomas Merton, Hildegard of Bingen, Thomas Berry and others who ignite the fire of mysticism within us all. This awakening of Eros is at the heart of the return of the Sacred Masculine. You will learn: How we are all mystics and how you can deepen your mysticism Teachings of modern mystics that can ignite your inner mystic Teachings of modern mystics that can confirm and deepen your own mysticism The return of the sacred masculine principle as a prerequisite for mystical awakening MODULE 4: THE SACRED MARRIAGE OF A DIVINE FEMALE AND A HOLY MAN (SEPTEMBER 28) Theologians Dorothy Soel and Father Trouble Griffiths equate mysticism with divine femininity. The exploration of the Divine Feminine provides a bridge to the Sacred Masculine. In this session, Matthew will help you consider Meister Eckhart and Adrienne Rich; Julian of Norwich and M.C. Richards; the wild woman practiced by Clarissa Pinkola Estes and Hildegard of Bingen; the marriage of the Green Man and the Black Madonna; and other mystics and myths. You will learn: Why do wise people teach that the return of the Divine feminine spell is also the return of mysticism How women poets and philosophers like Adrienne Rich and M.C. Richards awaken in us a sense of deep feminism The Teachings of Maester Eckhart and Thomas Merton on the Divine Feminine How to enter into a sacred marriage of the Divine Feminine and the Sacred Male
MODULE 5: FIGHTING THE FORCES OF EVIL (OCTOBER 5) Religion in the West has resold sin, demanding a new language for understanding and deeper discussion of the presence of evil in our lives and societies. Psychologist M. Scott Peck said that our language about evil is at a “primitive” stage. In Matthew Fox’s book “Evil, Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh: The Transformation of Evil in Soul and Society”, he proposes a new language born from the combination of the Eastern teachings on the seven chakras with the Western teachings on the seven deadly sins. In the foreword to this book, Deepak Chopra calls evil “the number one spiritual problem for the 21st century.” Developing your Sacred Masculine powers along with the Divine Feminine energies can prepare you to face evil and do something constructive. You will learn: A New Language Taken from East and West to Discuss and Discuss Evil How the 7 chakras of the East correspond to places of power in your body and psyche How the 7 major sins of the West relate to the chakras when they are off-center How sin differs from evil, but opens the door to it How can you stand against the forces of evil in society and in yourself MODULE 6: CREATIVITY WHERE DIVINE AND HUMAN MEET (OCTOBER 12) (PRE-WRITTEN) Modern thinkers and mystics such as Thomas Aquinas, Hildegard of Bingen, and Meister Eckhart teach us that we create with the spirit of creation. Modern anthropology proceeds from the fact that the very definition of man is “Bi-ped who creates things.” Does society put creativity first in our educational and religious communities? Why not? What is holding us back? How can human creativity heal and solve the great problems facing our species today? Where does our creativity come from? How do we connect to it again? How to release this creativity? How do we move from powerlessness to empowerment? You will learn: Sources of your creativity How your creativity (the development of the blue man within you) is, as the mystics teach, a de facto experience of the Spirit How your creativity can be used for good or for evil Ways to unleash your creativity and move from helplessness to empowerment MODULE 7: RESTORATION OF THE HOLY AND RETURN OF HOPE (OCTOBER 19) Hope is not optimism; it is hard work, both internally and externally, work that confronts injustice and evil in and around us. This work requires the restoration of the Sacred in which you exist and move. It requires you to fully revitalize the mystic within, nourishing your inner warrior or prophet … and it requires a sacred marriage of the Divine Feminine and the Sacred Masculine in a cosmology that evokes awe and wonder. In this final session, you will meet modern prophets Naomi Klein, Scott Sanders, Howard Thurman, Thomas Berry, Joanna Macy and others who revive hope and who themselves have developed the spiritual warrior in deep and rewarding ways. You will learn: How to restore a sense of the sacred Why despair and denial have no final say even in times of darkness As mystical warriors and prophets of our day, such as Naomi Klein and Scott Sanders, Howard Thurman and Joanna Macy and others, call us Teachings of these prophets that thwart despair, denial, and addiction How David Orr’s Rolling Up Sleeves Can Reawaken Sacred Masculinity Reconnected to Divine Feminine in Life and Practice.
